For financial breakthrough and sustainability to take effect, a set of principles, guidelines and laws ought to be strictly obeyed: these include investment, saving, innovation and resource management. Sadly, many of such laws and principles are unknown to many groups of people while in a fight against financial vulnerability: this is where NELHIN Uganda steps in to change the narrative through extensive training and mentorship programs on business and entrepreneurship. This particular program targets refugee and host communities in Nakivale and Rubondo with intention of building financial strength and resilience. NELHIN through I-UPSHIFT program, has trained refugees on building financial capacity through starting small scale business ventures while employing business economics knowledge on saving, investment, market research among others. Many micro mentorship groups that were formed are now registering unmatched and appealing success in their newly formed ventures: thanks to NELHIN’s unending commitment to improving livelihoods in among refugee and host communities. One of the beneficiaries testifies that the trainings aforementioned have helped him to start a small fast food stall with limited finances and resources. With extensive consultations from mentors, he was able to fully utilize a two hundred thousand shillings capital base to build a sustainable source of income to look after his new young family. NELHIN aims at enabling refugees’ economic self-reliance and resilience by providing skills training, market access, entrepreneurship support, asset protection to sustainably rebuild livelihoods and coping capacity.
